The Interior of the Synagogue

The Synagogue

Entrance to the Museo Ebraico

The Synagogue is visible from miles away across Rome. Built between 1904- 1906, it is a central part of the Jewish Quarter of Rome, where Jewish people first settled in the 2nd century BC. My characters frequented the Synagogue for Sabbath services. Now, its beautiful Museo Ebraico (Jewish Museum) features incredible objects of silver and fine embroidered tapestries, shawls, and garments crafted by Jewish artisans, many who almost certainly perished in the Holocaust.

On the day of our visit, the Synagogue was surrounded by policia, no doubt because of the Israeli/Gazan conflict. Before entering the Synagogue and museum, we went through serious security gates and bag searches. As we exited the museum, Jewish boys and girls dressed in white shirts and black pants, filled the streets after leaving their schuls/schools.
